improve deletion of consecutive variables #55357

Deleting many variables (like 300) via the gui
in a dataset with many variables (like 500) results
in long gui response times because each variable is
deleted individually by iteration. This results in many
items-changed callbacks which will result in long
gui waiting times. This patch reduces the number of
callbacks and the gui response is much faster.
